Trade Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Expanded Edition Tnird Printing. 491 Pages Indexed. No marks of any sort. Pages are bright, tight, and white. This third, revised edition is a century-spanning introduction to the story of a medium that flourished in one of the most developed of underdeveloped nations. Looking at Brazilian cinema for an American is like looking into a distorting mirror. The image is familiar enough to reassure but alien enough to fascinate. Brazil seems familiar because it is the New World country that most strikingly resembles the United States in both its historical formation and its ethnic composition. Both countries began as colonies of European states- Great Britain and Portugal. In both countries there ensued a conquest of vast territories that involved the near genocidal subjugation of Amerindian peoples. Both countries massively imported slaves from Africa, and both abolished the institution of slavery in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Both received waves of immigration from all over the world, ultimately forming pluriethnic societies with substantial Indian, black, Japanese, German, Italian, Slavic, and Jewish communities. Brazilian cultural history is marked by the same struggle for independence from Europe that characterizes the American experience. While in Brazil formal independence from Portugal led only to British free-trade imperialism in the nineteenth century and to American domination in the twentieth. No intelligent discussion of Brazil's cultural production can ignore the central fact of its economic dependency. N° de réf. du vendeur 20671
