Synopsis

An interactive programme that teaches intermediate and advanced Chinese language skills through exposure to Chinese literature and culture, providing an intellectually and aesthetically sophisticated experience. The CD and accompanying workbook introduce students to five leading modern Chinese writers - Ba Jin, Mao Dun, Ding Ling, Cao Yu and Ai Qing - through video interview footage in which the writers speak of their works and their country. Video clips have dual soundtracks in Mandarin and regional dialects and are intercut with archival footage, performances of the writers' works, and commentary on contemporary China, providing students with unlimited access to Chinese speakers with excellent pronunciation. More than 200 interactive activities with animation, graphics, recording and audio playback improve students' reading, listening and speaking competency and provide immediate feedback on the user's skills. Chung-wen Shih is professor emeritus of East Asian languages and literatures at George Washington University. She is the author of A Guide to China's Cosmopolitan Age, as well as two PBS film documentaries, China's Cosmopolitan Age: The Tang and Return from Silence: China's Revolutionary Writers. She lives in Washington, D.C.
