Paperback. Etat : Good. There are books that attempt to educate, books that attempt to inspire, and then there are books like Eye Spy Look A Like by Private Eye ? publications devoted entirely to the deeply British art of staring at two unrelated people and declaring, with enormous confidence, ?They do look a bit similar actually.? Published in 1988, this gloriously unnecessary masterpiece captures a lost golden age of satirical humour before the internet industrialised side-by-side comparisons into a global sport conducted by exhausted people on social media. And honestly, there is something magnificent about the simplicity of the concept. No plot. No grand thesis. Just photographs, visual coincidences and the quiet national understanding that public figures deserve mild humiliation whenever they accidentally resemble eighteenth-century composers, damp ferrets or regional councillors from Swindon. The cover alone tells you everything you need to know about Britain in the late 1980s. Yellow background. Loud typography. Slightly chaotic image placement. Arthur Scargill apparently resembling Rossini for reasons no one can fully explain. It radiates the unmistakable energy of a country surviving on satire, tea and low-level institutional distrust. Produced by Private Eye , naturally, because only Private Eye could take what should have been a single amusing magazine filler and expand it into an entire commercially published hardback with complete confidence. This was peak British satirical culture: a time when people still bought humour books to leave beside toilets, and when comedy largely consisted of pointing out that a politician resembled a startled badger. And yet these books are weirdly addictive. Once you start flipping through them, your brain begins deteriorating almost immediately. Every face starts resembling another face. Historical figures merge with soap actors. Bishops resemble racehorses. Television presenters become indistinguishable from Victorian industrialists. By page forty you are no longer entirely certain what humans are supposed to look like in the first place. The late-1980s atmosphere is glorious throughout. This was the era of proper print satire, before memes automated the process and before everyone carried an infinite image archive in their pockets. Back then, somebody at Private Eye had to physically discover these similarities, assemble them manually, and publish them with the quiet dignity of Fleet Street professionals. A slower, nobler civilisation. Condition is good overall, though with fading to the spine and cover as shown in the scan ? which honestly feels entirely appropriate for a humour book from 1988. These books were not bought as investment-grade collector?s items. They were read on trains, left in waiting rooms, carried to pubs and repeatedly shown to guests beginning with the words ?Look at this one.? Surviving copies inevitably acquire the slightly weary appearance of people who have spent decades attending dinner parties. The fading itself somehow improves the experience. It gives the book the aura of an ageing satirical veteran that has seen governments rise and fall while continuing to insist that public figures resemble household objects. There is honour in that persistence. A superb item for collectors of British satire, Private Eye devotees, lovers of visual humour, or anyone nostalgic for the strange analogue world before the internet transformed every passing resemblance into content within twelve seconds. Also ideal for coffee tables, bathrooms, commuter bags, or passive-aggressively leaving open during political discussions. Crappy Old Books: preserving Britain?s slightly faded sense of humour one eccentric paperback at a time. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. IT IN NO WAY DEMINISHED FROM THE READING. IF YOU WANT A PRISTINE.
