This major posthumous novel was first published in Yiddish in serial form in the late 1950s and is appearing in English for the first time. It tells the tragi-comic story of a circle of prosperous Jewish refugees in New York City in the 1940s. Twice-married Anna Makavar, who escaped the Holocaust with her rich but ultra-religious father, runs off with Hertz Grein, a tormented married man who has known her since she was a girl growing up in Warsaw. This shocking incident sets off a series of events which disturb the already angst-ridden circle of people surrounding her father.
