'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant' John Gray
'He opened the door for her and watched her walk away down the huge corridor, then hesitate at the top of the stairs. Heads turned as she passed. You sensed she came from a different world, the world of the night, and there was something almost indecent about her in the harsh light of a winter's day'
A young cabaret dancer in a black silk dress leads Maigret into a seamy world of nightclubs, drug addiction and exploitation on the streets of Montmartre.
This novel has been published in previous translations as Maigret and the Strangled Stripper and Maigret in Montmartre.
'One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories' Guardian
'A supreme writer . . . unforgettable vividness' Independent

Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. An intrepid traveller with a profound interest in people, Simenon strove on and off the page to understand, rather than to judge, the human condition in all its shades. His novels include the Inspector Maigret series and a richly varied body of wider work united by its evocative power, its economy of means, and its penetrating psychological insight. He is among the most widely read writers in the global canon. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Maigret delves into the sordid world of Montmartre nightclubs in this new translationThrough the half-open door, Dr. Pasquier could be seen putting his overcoat back on and replacing his instruments in his bag. On the white goatskin rug at the foot of the untouched bed, a body was stretched out: black satin dress, chalk white arm, auburn hair. What's most moving is always an absurd detail and, in this case, what caused Maigret's a momentary stab of anguish was, next to a foot still in its high heel, a foot out of its shoe, the toes visible through a silk stocking which was covered with flecks of mud and had a ladder starting at the heel and going up over the knee. Originally published in French as 'Maigret au Picratt's' by Presses de la Citae 1951. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
