Alan Peter Ryan's novels, short stories, and anthologies made him a major figure in the Golden Age of horror fiction in the 1980s. His 1984 novel Cast a Cold Eye has been called one of the best ghost stories ever written. He won a 1985 World Fantasy Award and his 1989 short story collection, The Bones Wizard, is regarded as one of the best ever published in the field. For twenty-five years after that he worked as a journalist, writing about books, music, travel, and culture for major American newspapers and magazines, serving for six years as vice president for awards of the National Book Critics Circle, and winning a Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award for The Reader's Companion to Mexico. In 2009 he returned to writing fiction. His new stories are appearing in numerous magazines and anthologies and his latest books are Amazonas and The Back of Beyond: New Stories.
A New Yorker by birth, he has traveled widely and lived in Santa Monica and London, and lives now in Rio de Janeiro.
