The speech addresses the publicâs view of scientists at the time, the major changes in the scientific field, and what scientists actually need and desire. Farlow discusses the recent change in public perception of scientists and how they are now seen as practical and respectable, rather than solely as curiosities. He also discusses the importance of organization in science but warns against having too much organization, as this can stifle creativity. Farlow then addresses the issue of funding for scientists, arguing that it is not enough to simply give scientists more money without creating a proper system of support. He suggests that the public can aid scientists by providing funding and equipment, as well as moral support. Farlow concludes by emphasizing the need for government support of science and the importance of finding a balance between government control and scientific freedom.
