While Enlightenment ideals promoted individual liberty and political rights, they provided no blueprint for a new society. The author explores how this tension played out in the early years of Louis XVI's reign as he and his advisors, including Turgot, Malesherbes, and Vergennes, attempted reforms designed to alleviate the suffering of the people and address the financial crisis facing the French state. Ultimately, the book reveals that Louis XVI's reign failed to reconcile the ideals of the Enlightenment with the realities of entrenched political and economic power, setting the stage for the dramatic events of the French Revolution.
