The author argues that in Europe, from the fall of the Roman Empire through to the 11th century, an era of barbarism and political instability reigned. The book goes on to describe how the era of the Crusades had the unexpected effect of introducing new ideas and increasing trade which in turn led to the development of towns and cities. The author argues that the rise of an urban middle class and the establishment of the legal protections contained within the charters granted to towns and cities, transformed European society and paved the way for the development of modern nation states.
