Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the life of Dr. John Esten Cooke, a physician whose reputation as a writer and practitioner of medicine in Kentucky extended throughout the Southwest during the 19th century. The author provides an outline of Cooke's theory of disease and treatment, which was heavily influenced by the work of Parry, Armstrong, and James Johnson. Cooke believed that fever was the result of congestion and that the appropriate treatment was to remove that congestion through bloodletting, emetics, cold-water, and purgatives, especially calomel. The author also discusses Cooke's contributions to medical literature, including his influential Treatise of Pathology and Therapeutics, which established him as a leading medical thinker of his time. The book also discusses Cooke's conversion to the Episcopal Church and his subsequent writings on church history and polity. This biography provides insights into the life, work, and thought of a significant figure in the history of American medicine.
