Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a critical analysis of an essay by Christopher C. Yates on the bilious epidemic fever. The author takes issue with Yates's diagnosis of the disease and his prescribed treatment of emetics and cathartics. The author asserts that the epidemic is not a bilious fever but a malignant fever, and that emetics and cathartics are not the most effective treatment. The author argues that the epidemic is characterized by a brown or black tongue, dark and fetid sordes about the teeth, a livid flush of the countenance, and an acrid and more intense heat of the skin. He also disputes Yates's theory that the proximate cause of the epidemic is a secretion of morbid acrid matter, or vitiated bile. The author concludes by stating that Yates's essay is full of errors and inconsistencies, and that his treatment is not the most effective for the epidemic.
