The Mechanics Institute and Literary Association has been an institution of the town of Lindsay during the past twenty years. It has had its ups and downs like most human institutions. At first the membership was not large, but was decidedly lil)eral in time and money and a great deal of self sacrificing labor was bestowed upon the founding and early working of the Library. Fortunately this zealous labor of love has never ceased, and owing to this fact the Library has come through its troubles in safety and gives promi enow of becoming a worthy feature of this town and county. In 1895 the name was changed by statute to the Lindsay Public Library. In 1899, the citizens voted to make it a free library, and on March 22, 1899, it was opened as a free library to the town of Lindsay and the county of Victoria
