Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an exploration of a dispute between the author, a descendant of the original owner of a painting, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The painting, "The Landing of the Northmen" by Emanuel Leutze, was gifted to the academy under the condition that it be displayed with appropriate context. However, in 1898 the academy sold the painting at auction for $90. The author, upon learning of this, attempted to compel the academy to repurchase the artwork but was unsuccessful due to the academy's status as a charitable organization. The author argues that charitable institutions should be held to the same standards as individuals when it comes to respecting the conditions of a gift and that changes need to be made to ensure that the wishes of donors are honored.
