In the mid-19th century, the author found that many of the anthem texts in common use were merely ornamental preludes to services, serving no other purpose than to entertain the congregation and showcase the vocal prowess of the choir. They were not, as the author believed they should be, sincere acts of worship. This book was written with the intention of correcting that and providing for the people a collection of suitable and meaningful texts. It is the author's hope that, through the use of these texts, the congregation may become more actively involved in the act of worship.
