Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book challenges prevailing conceptions about the origins of the adhesive postage stamp, offering fresh details on an invention that revolutionized how the world sends mail. The author argues that the stamp, initially proposed by inventor and bookseller James Chalmers in 1834, was later wrongly attributed to postal reformer Sir Rowland Hill. The author presents extensive evidence, including letters, newspaper articles, and official documents, to support his claim that Chalmers deserves credit for the invention that made penny postage possible. The book traces the history of the postage stamp from its humble beginnings to its widespread adoption, providing new insights into postal reform and the often-hidden role of inventors who shape our everyday lives.
