This work (B ulletin No. 30) is the fortieth of a series of papers iutended to illustrate the collections of natural history and ethnology belouging to the United States, and constituting theN ational Museum, of which theS mithsonian Institution was placed in charge by the act of Congress of August 10, 1840. It constitutes the third of the series of bibliographies illustrating the work of theM useum. It has been ])repared at the request of the I nstitution, and printed by authority of the honorableS ecretary of the I nterior. The publications of theN ational Museum consist of two series theB ulletins, of which this isN o. 30, in continuous series, and the Proceedings, of which the eighth volume is now in ])ress. The volumes of Proceedings are printed signature by signature, each issue having its own date, and a small edition of each signature is distributed to libraries promptly after its publication. From time to time the publications of theM useum which have been issued sejiarately are combined together and issued as volumes of theM iscellaneous Collections. These are struck ott from the stereotype l)late8 from which the first edition was printed, and in this form are distributed by theS mithsonian Institution to libraries and scientific societies throughout the world. Volume 13 of these collections includes bulletins 1to 10, inclusive; volume 19, volumes 1and 2of the Proceedings ;volume 22, volumes 3and 4of the Proceedings; and volume 23, Jiullclins 11 to 15, inclusive.
