Explore Titian’s later years through the lens of Claude Phillips in The Later Work of Titian. This study traces how a master, already secure in his Venetian voice, absorbed Rome’s grand sights, the Vatican’s treasures, and the shifting currents of 16th‑century art. It frames Titian’s late works against his Rome visit, the influence of Michelangelo and Raphael, and the enduring balance between color and design.
The book surveys key works and motifs from the later period, including landscapes, noble portraits, and sacred subjects. It discusses how Titian’s technique and vision evolved, how he responded to the Roman milieu, and how his final masterpieces crown a long, influential career.
Ideal for readers of art history and Titian enthusiasts seeking a focused look at the late, luminous phase of a master’s career.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the evolution of Titian's later style and themes, focusing on his work during the middle period of his career. The author discusses Titian's relationship with important patrons such as Charles V, Philip II, and the Gonzaga family, and examines how these relationships influenced his artistic development. The book also considers the thematic development of Titian's work during this period, arguing that he moved away from the more idealized representations of earlier years towards a more realistic and naturalistic style, characterized by a focus on human emotion and physicality. The result is a comprehensive study of one of the most significant periods in the career of one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
