Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book follows the peculiar, sometimes-involuntary, adventures of a young botany specialist who travels to Greece in the mid-nineteenth century to study its plant life. After settling into his lodgings in Athens, the author finds himself immersed in Greek history and culture, recounting for the reader a detailed narrative of some of the most prominent figures and pressing issues of the time. Through his interactions with locals like the confectioner Christodule and his family, he gradually learns of the complex and often-tragic realities of living under Ottoman rule, seeing firsthand the dynamics between the Greek people and their occupiers, as well as the impact of the Greek War of Independence. Among the many topics discussed throughout the text are the endemic social conditions that allowed the presence of brigands in the Greek countryside, and the extent to which these outlaws enjoyed a degree of popular support from people subject to the capricious rule of an often-absent state. The author also explores the social climate of occupied Greece, where the desire for independence and freedom coexisted uneasily with the economic and cultural influence of Western powers.
