Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents new observations on the development of the ovule in angiosperm plants, or flowering plants. Published in 1879, the author's work was groundbreaking, and it reframed our understanding of the ovule. In the years immediately preceding the publication of this book, the author built on the work of his contemporaries, including that of Wilhelm Hofmeister, who was the first to observe the formation of embryos within the ovules of flowering plants. The author further established that the ovules of flowering plants are homologous to megasporangia in lower plants, which was a key concept in bringing the study of plant embryology into the growing field of comparative morphology. By using newly developed histological techniques and studying a wide range of plants, the author showed that the ovule is a complex structure made up of several different tissues, and he traced the development of these tissues from their earliest stages. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of botany or in the development of flowering plants. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
