In subacute cases the characteristic color is rarely present; but here we find depositions of broken-down red blood corpuscles in the bone marrow, spleen, and liver; the latter two organs are enlarged. The kidneys, too, are usually swollen, the tubules are filled up with the débris of the red blood cells, the epithelia are in a state of cloudy swelling, which is, however, according to Marchand, of a second ary nature and due only to the pressure of the plugs.
