This book takes aim at a phenomenon that has come to prevail in many German Reformed and Lutheran churches: the Anxious Bench system, and with it, the broader system of what are termed in this book as "New Measures". The author's chief concern is with the spiritual harm he believes is caused by these measures and the error that pervades their use in the practice of religion. He shows how such practices hinder rather than facilitate the true goal of religious life, which is to awaken a sincere and lasting devotion to God. This book does not support the practice of the Anxious Bench system or other sensational techniques in religious worship, considering them to be departures from the authentic spirit of Christianity. Instead, the author calls for a return to more traditional and substantial practices of worship and pastoral care. In his view, true Christian revival is not to be found in emotional or theatrical displays, but through faith and the diligent cultivation of one's devotion.
