In the early 19th century, cholera was poorly understood and often treated with excessive doses of calomel that were ineffective or even harmful. The author of this book, a military medical inspector, carefully studied the symptoms and progression of cholera and realized that it was always preceded by a mild form of diarrhea, often for several weeks. He therefore reasoned that if this early stage of the disease was treated, the fatal later stage could be prevented. Unfortunately, the War Office refused to accept his proposal to study the matter further, even though the author had been commissioned to examine and report on the army's public health measures.
