Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a compendium of articles on the immunology of various bacterial pathogens. 1902 was an exciting time for the study of bacteriology, as it was just after the discovery that many diseases were caused by bacteria. The first 22 pages of this book are taken up with background information, including the history of germ theory and a discussion of toxins and antitoxins, the components of the immune system, and the mechanisms of immunity. The rest of the book is divided into seven sections, each of which describes the immunology of a different group of bacteria. The section on diphtheria describes the discovery of the diphtheria bacillus and the development of the diphtheria antitoxin, which greatly reduced mortality from this disease. The section on cholera discusses the development of a cholera vaccine using what the author terms "toxoids." The final sections of the book discuss other major bacterial diseases such as tetanus, typhoid fever, and bubonic plague.
