The aim Of this work is to present certain phases of life and Character as described and exemplified by British letter-writers. While the search for materials has not been exhaust tive, it has been reasonably thorough. The number Of writers quoted is not partiarly large; and that fact is a matter of indifference; for the end in w has not been to crowd the pages with distinguished names, but to insure the essential fitness Of the selections - a fitness consisting in their special adaptation to the plan Of the series.
The peiar Charm Of letters - perhaps, also, their greatest value - is brought home to us when they are familiar, unstudied expressions Of thought and feeling; when they betray no sense Of a larger audience than the friends for whom alone they were written. The contents Of these volumes do not uniformly maintain so high an excellence, but they exhibit many striking examples Of it. Letters which are known to have been intended for publication.
