This book is a collection of hymns and tunes selected from various sources, including the Psalms and Hymns of the Presbyterian Church, and many other extant tunes. The author's aim was to provide a practical resource for congregational singing in the house of God by restricting the number of both hymns and tunes, and by providing the means of easily training children, in the family and Sunday school, in the standard devotional poetry and music of the Church. The result is a curated collection of over 60 tunes and 150 hymns, including the 196th hymn from the Olney Hymns, a Saturday-evening hymn, and many more beloved pieces. The author has also made some changes to the wording of the hymns, including replacing certain phrases and stanzas with ones the author felt were more desirable. The author's hope is that this book will promote congregational song in the house of God and prove useful to the people to whose use it is dedicated.
