Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a memoir that presents a nuanced critique of the English Dissenting system, and especially the educational facilities and academic rigors of the dissenting academy the author attended. The author, who eventually became a minister, was dismayed by the poor academic preparation and the shallow understanding of theology and Biblical languages he witnessed among his fellow students and even some faculty. He argues that the lack of robust academic engagement was because ordination was open to any man by any congregation, regardless of education, which resulted in the lowering of standards in Dissenting academies. The author further critiques the Dissenting system for its over-reliance on extemporaneous, off-the-cuff preaching, and its eccentric emphasis on prayer meetings that led to unprofessional and even chaotic worship services. Despite the author's obvious commitment to the values of Nonconformity, this book provides an illuminating and candid insider's view of the weaknesses and strengths of the English Dissenting movement in the author's time.
