This book presents the results of meticulous and novel experiments conducted from 1899-1905 detailing the developmental abnormalities observed in echinoderm eggs fertilized by multiple sperm. Upon fertilization, the author discovered that the quantity of sperm influenced the prevalence of abnormalities, especially in cases where there were more than two fertilizing sperm present. Experiments revealed the presence of a specific quantity and quality of chromosomal material was necessary for normal development, and the mechanism for partitioning the genetic material during cellular division was not precise enough to ensure proper inheritance of this material when more than one sperm was present. The author concludes that an understanding of the mechanisms and failures of chromosomal inheritance in these experiments can elucidate the genetic foundation of normal embryonic development.
