The authors are Michel Angelo, Klopstock, Lamartine, and Filicaja. The poems within this collection express a reverence for Christianity generally, and in many instances, a strong attachment to its most mysterious facts and peculiar doctrines. The collection includes lyrics by Klopstock, the Pindar of modern German poetry, who was renowned for his epic, the Messiah, and several of his poems from a celebration of the coming of spring. Also included are several sonnets from Filicaja, considered to have raised himself to the highest point any Italian lyric poet has attained, and a number of pieces from Lamartine who was described by a French critic as a new deliverer who with the cross in his hand broke the idol of materialism and dethroned Voltaire. An English translator has skillfully translated all the poems while adhering to the original meanings and styles. This volume, therefore, makes available to English readers a treasury of spiritual poetry from four of the worldâs greatest poets.
