This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book follows Monica Trant, a young woman navigating the complexities of London society in the early 20th century. Having recently lost her family fortune, Monica struggles to make ends meet in the competitive world of business, working as a typist at the Near Oriental Shipping Agency. Monica's life takes an unexpected turn when her employer, William Waters, proposes a unique arrangement: he desires a "nominal" fiancÃÂ e to maintain the illusion of a committed relationship, and he offers Monica a hefty sum of money for her services. The author delves into the social constraints and economic pressures faced by women in this era, exploring themes of class, gender, and the challenges of finding independence in a society where marriage often serves as the primary path to security. The book offers a humorous and insightful look at the hypocrisy of social conventions, particularly regarding love and courtship, as Monica grapples with the absurdity of the situation while attempting to maintain her dignity and navigate her personal aspirations. The author's sharp wit and keen observations provide a unique perspective on the evolving social landscape of early 20th-century London, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of a woman seeking to carve out her own destiny in a world where expectations are often rigid and roles strictly defined. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
