The author examines data from dairy farms in New Hampshire in the 1950s, and presents representative farm inventories and budgets to illustrate the relationship between size, capital, investment, and income. The book finds that larger farms are better able to meet repayment terms on loans and accumulate equity than smaller farms. This is because larger farms have greater capital accumulation potential and are able to generate more income. The author concludes that, in order to progress toward full ownership out of earnings, farmers need the use of large farms. This in turn requires increased suitable rental arrangements or increased use of practically 100 percent credit.
