Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. Drawing from detailed plankton analyses conducted over four years, this book documents the seasonal and annual variations in zooplankton volume on the continental shelf from Cape Cod to Chesapeake Bay. These detailed measurements are then used to calculate the total volume of the zooplankton, not only for each season but also for the water column as a whole and for individual species. The volume of the total zooplankton population is shown to vary greatly, ranging from a hundred-fold difference between stations in winter to a ten-fold difference in summer. The composition of the zooplankton also varied widely on spatial and seasonal scales - in February, Calanus was found to concentrate near the surface, while in May and June, it was most abundant some distance below the surface. Diurnal vertical migrations within the zooplankton population were found to vary by species and showed seasonal changes in intensity. The data collected in this book provide a valuable and detailed exploration of the zooplankton community in the continental shelf from Cape Cod to Chesapeake Bay. It highlights the complexity and variability of the zooplankton population, contributing to our understanding of plankton ecology and its role in the marine ecosystem.
