Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on the primarily water-conducting rhizoids of liverworts known as the Marchantiaceae. The author has discovered that the unique peg-like structures of the rhizoids aid in both water absorption and storage. While other scientists have made claims about the function of peg-like rhizoids, none have conducted experiments to support their claims. Using a variety of microscopic and chemical techniques, the author provides evidence for his hypothesis that the pegs facilitate water movement through the rhizoids by preventing pauses in water flow that would occur when the plant experiences water stress and air bubbles form within the rhizoids. The author also discusses how water-stress affects the form and placement of rhizoids in several liverwort species. The book also examines the impact of environmental factors on the development of rhizoids and their ecological role in supporting water absorption and storage in liverwort species, ultimately aiding in our understanding of how plants have evolved to absorb water and survive in a variety of habitats.
