The letters examine the significance of classicism in German literature, and particularly the qualities of a writer whom they refer to only as the "Grecian". Across the letters, we read the correspondents' commentary on a wide range of authors and their literary output, including Klopstock, Lessing, Wieland, and Bodmer, in addition to "the Grecian". More deeply, the letters trace the development of literary movements from the Baroque period through the Enlightenment. The correspondents argue over the aesthetic merits of writing in Greek style, and debate the development of German literature in relation to the works of classic authors. This book allows us to listen in on a fascinating discussion between significant literary figures of this era, offering particular insights both into the lives of the literati and the historical literary movements which shaped the way we read today.
