The author's goal is to interpret the test battery used, to present a picture of the subjects as a group, and to consider how individuals differed from those who secured employment and those who did not. These NYA members were unemployed youth, predominantly high-school graduates, 19 years of age, and eager to grasp opportunities that would help them obtain jobs. They represented a cosmopolitan cross-section of Greater Boston's white population in need of assistance. The book provides clear descriptions of the revised Alpha Examination, Beckman Revision of Allport's Reaction Study, and O'Connor's Clerical Aptitude Test, Mechanical Aptitude Test, Finger Dexterity Test, and Tweezer Dexterity Test. These tests, grouped together as a battery, were intended to create profiles of the subjects. By comparing these profiles to national norms, counselors could gain an initial understanding of each subject's aptitude, interests, and personality. The book presents an in-depth analysis of occupational ability patterns, interests, strengths, and weaknesses of the individuals tested. It includes a discussion on the use of test data in counseling and guidance, emphasizing the need for caution in interpretation and the importance of considering factors beyond those indicated by psychological tests.
