NO. Romanzo della prima maniera di Alfredo Oriani che ebbe quattro edizioni fra il 1881 e il 1894. Segna una data nello svolgimento dell’arte dello scrittore, perché, per la prima volta, qui c’è una trama svolgentesi con una rapidità abilissima di posizioni. Scrive al riguardo Mario Missiroli: “La protagonista, Ida, figlia di una ex levatrice e di un mediocre ingegnere, è cresciuta in una solitudine rabbiosa; suo motto e sua divisa, cercati nei libri e nelle estenuanti meditazioni, è: devastare per arrivare; essa vive per la negazione. Rifiuta la mano di un galantuomo e un posto di direttrice. All’infelice Rocco, gobbo e ripugnante, di cui essa fa l'oggetto della sua libidine, nega nell’ora estrema quel che gli ha fatto sperare. Ha distrutto nel suo pensiero, nel suo spirito ogni idea, ogni credenza. Vuole la ricchezza. Orfana, si rifugia nella casa signorile di una sua sorella di latte. Ma ne insidia con viltà e raffinatezza inaudite la prima notte di matrimonio. Cacciata di casa vorrà vendicarsi e complotta un duello dello sposo della sua sorella di latte con uno spadaccino che lo fredda. A coronamento della vittoria, si fa sposare da un vecchio che l’ha per anni mantenuta. La concezione audacissima ha una sua linea impeccabile. L’Oriani si è proposto di incarnare in una donna un pensiero negativo e ribelle nella luce di un contrasto fra l’individuo e la società. Con la stessa sua paradossale aberrazione il personaggio colpisce per la linearità del suo comportamento e della sua indomabile passione. Il tocco dell’Oriani si rivela anche nella cronistoria di una figura cosi raffinatamente perversa, in particolari che s’imprimono indelebili nella fantasia del lettore.”
