Unfortunately, most of the literature on African art has ignored East Africa or implied that it is a region devoid of art. Yet studies of the Makonde and the Swahili already indicate the existence of strong artistic traditions in this area of Africa. There is really no evidence to suggest that East Africa is an artistic wasteland; rather, the problem is that there has been too little research done on the subject to lead to any useful conclusive statements. This bibliography is meant as a stimulus to interest in and research on East African art, so that the truth of the matter can be ascertained. For the purposes of this bibliography, the term East Africa is used in its modern political sense to include the nations of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Because the Makonde people and their immediate neighbors inhabiting parts of Tanzania and Mozambique have a distinct artistic style, they have been included here as the Makonde Group. As an art style region, East Africa should include not only these countries but also Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Ruanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia. It is hoped that eventually there will be full bibliographic coverage of the art of all of East Africa. This bibliography is a first step toward that goal. . (Vorwort) // INHALT : Introduction ------ Acknowledgments ------ Abbreviations ------ East Africa: General ------ Kenya ------ Tanzania ------ Makonde Group ------ Uganda ------ Culture Index ------ Author Index ------ Subject Index. // . Books, periodicals, articles, and archival sources that provide information on any aspect of material culture have been included in this bibliography. This material culture approach is appropriate because the dimensions of East African art have not yet been determined. The compiler has been as thorough as possible, although recognizing that no bibliography can be totally exhaustive and entirely correct. This bibliography is the result of research on three continents over the last five years, but future investigations will undoubtedly uncover additional sources and indicate revisions. Approximately 90 per cent of the items listed in this bibliography, which includes works published up to July 1979, were inspected by the compiler. .
