Varela considered himself a loyal supporter of King Alfonso XIII. In this book, he explores his love for Spain and his concerns about the growing republican movement in Spain in the early 20th century. Varela believed that some who claimed to support the monarchy were actually working against it and were traitors to the King. He was particularly concerned about the activities of Alejandro Lerroux, who he consistently referred to as a "chancer". Throughout his writings, Varela emphasises his belief that the army remained loyal to the monarchy and that it was the duty of loyal Spaniards to combat the enemies of the monarchy wherever they were to be found.
