Ce commentaire qui paraît dans les Études Bibliques a été conçu et exécuté d'après le plan exposé par la Revue Biblique, il y a près de huit ans'. Rechercher, à l'aide des Septante et de la Vulgate, avec tous les secours de la critique textuelle, la teneur primitive du texte hébraïque, traduire et interpréter ce texte a la lumière de la philologie et de l'histoire, chercher à analyser le procédé littéraire qui a abouti à la rédaction définitive, tel est, avant tout, le but poursuivi. L'auteur est le premier à constater com bien il est resté en deçà de l'idéal dont il cherchait à se rapprocher et il demandé, par avance, au lecteur de lui ètre indulgent s'il ne trouve pas dans ce livre tout: cequ'îl en attendait. Pour ce qui est, en particulier, de la distinction des récits, nous nous sommes rangé au système qui nous a paru le plus probable, sans vouloir lui donner d'autre valeur que celle d'une hypothèse conjecturale destinée à ren dre moins obscur le travail de la composition littéraire et sans pré juger la question du Pentateuque.
