Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the history of the Church of England and the rise of nonconformist movements. The author argues that the desire to preserve the established Church of England from the threat of Roman Catholicism led to increasingly strict enforcement of its practices to the exclusion of those who held different beliefs. The author then moves on to examine the ways in which nonconformists responded to this development and analyzes the theological underpinnings of various dissenting groups, including Presbyterians, Independents, and Baptists. The book draws attention to the ways in which principles espoused by some nonconformist groups could be used to justify endless rounds of division and sectarianism. However, the author is ultimately optimistic, concluding that the historical examination of these issues will help foster greater unity among Protestant churches and strengthen the Protestant cause against Roman Catholicism.
