Upset by the relocation, she convinces him to allow her to continue schooling in Virginia under the guardianship of General Berkeley. Upon arriving in Virginia, she finds herself in a world vastly different from the one she has known, caught between the expectations of Southern society and her Northern upbringing. She befriends several young ladies, including Hinda Wriothesley and Olivia Schermerhorn, and becomes romantically entangled with Dan Berkeley, her guardian's stepson. The author's experiences in the South, from the allure of plantation life to her struggle with societal norms, provide a unique lens through which to examine the complexities of the American South in the mid-19th century.
