As an epic poem, it takes place in the Garden of Eden and Heaven, looking at the role that Satan plays in the consequences that are to follow. The author then examines the temptations that are put to both Adam and Eve and the resulting effects of their actions. They are tempted by Satan, who is disguised as a serpent, and as they succumb to the temptation, it brings about their fall from grace. The book explores major themes of good and evil, man's obedience to God, and the consequences of disobedience, while also looking at the relationship between God and man. It represents man's disobedience to God and the resulting loss of paradise.
