This book contains the proceedings of two trials held in the High Court of Justiciary at Edinburgh, one against Alexander McLaren and the other against Thomas Baird, for sedition. The trials took place in March 1817. McLaren was a weaver and Baird a merchant, both from Kilmarnock in Ayrshire. They were charged with delivering seditious speeches and publishing a seditious pamphlet. The speeches and pamphlet contained attacks on the government and the House of Commons, and called for reform. The trials were significant because they were part of a wider crackdown on radical activity in Scotland at the time. The outcome of the trials was that both McLaren and Baird were found guilty of sedition and sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay. This book provides a valuable insight into the nature of sedition in Scotland in the early 19th century.
