The author argues that interpretations of imago Dei have remained consistent in core ideas, yet many of these notions have led to abstract and speculative theological constructions of human uniqueness that float free of the realities of nature and of the human body. The book critiques the notion of human uniqueness based on disembodied theological notions, focusing instead on ideas about the notion of the imago Dei in a highly contextualized, embodied sense that respects the material context of human origins. The author explores the emergence of the symbolic human mind and the historical and material context of human origins as demonstrated by the spectacular cave art of the Upper Paleolithic. The book also presents recent interdisciplinary challenges coming from voices in the neurosciences and how they are reshaping theological anthropology. The author engages in conversations with scholars from different disciplines on issues of embodiment and its crucial role in theology and science, arguing that human uniqueness can be adequately addressed only if we take seriously our own animality and embodied personhood in theology and the sciences.
