Excerpt from A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States, Vol. 2 of 2: Its Causes, Character, Conduct and Results; Presented in a Series of Colloquies at Liberty Hall
Since the Publication of the First Volume, several attacks have been made upon positions therein assumed. The most important of these which has come to my notice, was the one by Mr. Greeley, in the New York Tribune, during the last summer. As it is important in matters of this sort as well as others, that positions in the rear be made perfectly secure before further advances in front, it is also deemed quite proper that that attack shall be here noticed before the reader''s attention 18 invited to the Colloquies which follow.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a pivotal period in American history, meticulously examining the causes and consequences of the Civil War. Through insightful dialogues, the author engages in a comprehensive exploration of the constitutional principles that underpinned the conflict, shedding light on the complexities of state sovereignty, secession, and the institution of slavery. The central theme revolves around the clash between differing interpretations of the Constitution and the balance of power between federal and state governments. The author contends that the war stemmed from a fundamental disagreement over the nature of the Union and the rights of individual states. By delving into historical events and legal arguments, the book offers a nuanced perspective on the factors that led to the nation's division. The discussions encompass a wide range of topics, including the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and the events leading up to the fall of Fort Sumter. The author's analysis extends beyond political and legal considerations, exploring the social and economic implications of slavery and its role in exacerbating sectional tensions. Ultimately, the book's exploration of the Civil War's constitutional underpinnings serves as a reminder of the fragility of political unions and the enduring challenges of balancing individual liberties with national unity.
