Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the lives of townspeople throughout the 18th century. In hundreds of towns across France, urban society was transitioning. Townspeople, especially those living in larger towns, began to benefit from privileges and rights, which varied greatly depending on the town. The author explains that the power of the central monarchy limited the independence of towns, but reforms created new bodies of local governance. The influence of local elites waned, yet democracy began to grow. The role of women and the changing structure of the bourgeois class are also discussed. The author provides captivating examples of how these different classes of people lived, worked, and governed themselves during a time of great social change. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9780259432449_0
