As his epistles are typical of the genre, the author analyses them in order to illustrate the epistolary art as it was cultivated during the Second Sophistic period. This study examines how Alciphron's epistles mirror the style and approach of earlier authors as well as some of the concerns of the time such as society, the role of women, the importance of the individual versus the collective, and the clash between tradition and modernity.
