Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. Drawing upon a selection of primary grade readers from the early 19th and early 20th centuries, this book examines the role of these texts in the education of young children during this period. The formation of a child's reading vocabulary has long been a subject of debate, and the author contends that vocabulary accrued through exposure to classic tales is as, if not more, valuable than vocabulary built through exposure to simple, everyday language. Drawing on the pedagogical principles established by educational pioneers like Stanley Hall, the author argues that there is educational value in the grimmer elements of classic tales, and that children possess a unique way of interpreting these elements that does not expose them to the same horrors experienced by adults. The final chapter in the book explores the ways in which the serial nature and grotesque elements found in these primary readers of the past have influenced the development of modern serial formats, such as daily newspaper comics and Sunday funnies, as well as other forms of popular entertainment in the present day.
