Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a revealing look at the life and work of J. M. Edelstein, a renowned Chief Librarian and bibliographer whose work has had a profound impact on the field of library science. The book delves deep into the personal and professional experiences that shaped Edelstein's career, weaving together rich biographical details with insights into the intellectual currents that influenced his thinking. From his humble beginnings as the son of Jewish immigrants in Depression-era Baltimore to his groundbreaking work at the National Gallery of Art, the book explores the evolution of Edelstein's ideas about the role of libraries and the enduring power of books. Through his profound understanding of the history of publishing and the book trade, Edelstein believed that libraries were more than repositories of knowledge; they were vital centers for the preservation and dissemination of culture. The book also examines Edelstein's role in shaping the development of American rare book collecting, his advocacy for archival preservation, and his work as a bibliographer and scholar. By tracing the threads that connect Edelstein's personal journey to his groundbreaking contributions to library science, this book offers a compelling exploration of how the life of one individual can leave an enduring mark on a field of study.
