Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a deep and damning insight into the New York penal system of the 1820s, not long after its inception and at a time when many believed it represented the apex of humane incarceration. The author, an anonymous convict, pulls no punches in his indictment of a system he argues is counter to its stated purpose. Internal punishments are inhumaneâ"whipping and solitary confinement are common, while those in positions of authority over the prisoners are depicted as immoral and sadistic. Levels of recidivism are high and the author believes this is directly attributable to the way in which the prison is run. He argues that the prison does little to nothing to rehabilitate its inmates and instead actively takes steps that increase the likelihood of future criminal behavior. The author's unwavering insistence that the system he is describing is fundamentally broken makes this an important addition to the growing body of literature on the history of incarceration in the United States.
