The object of the Christian Brothers in issuing a new edition of their Readers, is to place in the hands of our Catholic boys and girls a set of books which not only embody the latest and best methods of imparting the diffit art of Reading, but which, at the same time, present the most suitable matter to attain that end. The aim has been to assist in teaching both how to read and what to read. The lessons in each number of the series have been written or selected with a w to interest as well as to instruct; to build up a strong moral character; to tivate a taste for the best literature; and to imbue our children with an intelligent love of Faith and Country.

These Readers have also been specially designed to elicit thought and facilitate literary composition. Hence, oral instruction, class talks, the meaning of words and phrases, getting the pupils to give in their own language the sense of what they read, paraphrasing, and exercises in original composition, all receive the attention which their importance demands. In this way will the pupils, while learning to read, and from their earliest years, acquire that readiness in grasping the thoughts of others, and that fluency in expressing their own, which are so essential to a good English education.
